My last week as an elementary student

By: Cadence Wright

For the past six years I’ve been an elementary student. I have enjoyed recess, field trips, and playing with all my friends. Some teachers have really helped me a lot but a few of them need to quit their jobs because they didn’t know what they were doing. I have gone to 5 schools in 4 cities in 6 years. It makes no sense how my daddy has moved us more than a Military family! When I look back over the years, I can truly say all of the schools I attended were good.

I was born in Shreveport, LA but I didn’t live there long. My first school was Alexander Academy. It’s funny I can still remember that school. It’s because Ms. Jones was my favorite teacher and she has stayed in touch with me all these years. She helped when I needed help and made me feel welcome when I was a new student. I was a toddler then but I still remember how pretty and nice she was to me. Every year on my birthday she sends me a message through my daddy on Facebook!

We moved to New Orleans when I was five years old. I was accepted into the KIPP Program. There was a huge waiting list and my parents came down here a year in advance to get me on the list. When we finally moved here I got in. I use to love that school and I cried like a baby when I had to leave. My favorite teacher there was Coach D. He was cool and all the kids loved him. He made school fun every day of the week. Now that I think about it, Coach D was the first and also the only Black Male teacher I have ever had in my life. I didn’t even know Black men could be teachers until Coach D. He became good friends with my dad and I got to see him on the weekends too. It was almost like he became my uncle!

The teacher who has inspired me the most is Mrs. Fransack at my current school. This lady is the nicest, kindest, coolest teacher in the world. I was struggling in some classes but she never quit on me. She would find new fun ways to help me understand the things I couldn’t get. She was the first teacher to really make me want to learn more. I will miss her the most of all my teachers. I think I was her favorite student too. Don’t tell the other kids. I have to be her favorite student because she is retiring next year. Sounds to me like she was sticking around until I graduated!

I’ve gone on many field trips. My favorite one was Audubon Zoo. New Orleans has the third largest zoo in America. It’s huge. It has a water park inside, an IMAX theater, and so many animals you’d get lost in the maze.

Every year we had to do different projects. My favorite project of all the projects I did in Elementary was my third grade project on Africa. I had to learn the climate, clothes, culture, and food. I learned about many of the countries and their customs. It was so interesting. My dad always helps me with my projects. That’s the one thing he and I have always done together. I made an A on my Africa project and I still have the poster board on my wall to this day. Since then I have had a great interest in African culture. Wakanda Forever!

Next year, I don’t have to carry my books all day because I will have a locker. I have to get up earlier because the Junior High bus comes in our neighborhood much earlier than the elementary bus. I will definitely miss recess but the fact that junior high gets out of school almost two hours earlier than my current school is a fair deal! Mostly I am looking forward to a new school uniform color. Now that I think about it, every school I have been to has had light blue shirts. I have worn light blue so long I feel like the sky. Next year, my school shirt will be green. Finally, I’ll get to feel like money!
