Monroe’s firefighters complain of lowest base pay in area, chief wants raise too

Last week Monroe fire chief Terry Williams praised the city’s fire department and the dedication of its firemen, but when asked whether the base pay of firefighters should be raised, Williams sidestepped the question, joked that everyone in the department needs a raise including the chief.

    However, the city’s firefighter association doesn’t find any humor in the low pay of firefighters that begins with a base of $21,000 a year.

    Williams made his comments at a Town Hall meeting held at the Berean Baptist Church. The meeting was sponsored by District four City Councilman Carday Marshal.

    Williams said firefighters get a series of incentives that add to their base salary of 21,000 a year, such as a 2% increase annual increase and incentives for college education.
