The Millard Dean Lee Memorial Scholarship Program was held on Sunday at Rose of Sharon Baptist Church, where Rev. Dr. A.B. Davis-Johnson, Sr. is the pastor.
Lee died in 2005 but in 1983, he pioneered the scholarship to highlight the success of students. The program has grown over the years and in 2007, the church voted to rename its scholarship in Lee’s honor.
The speaker for this year’s program was Eleanor Ann Smith. She encouraged the students to consider themselves always valuable. She took a twenty dollar bill, balled it up and told the honorees that even in that state, it didn’t lose its value, that people would still want it and spend it. She said they would have to be the same way in life.
The honorees included: Ja’Kavion Abram, Jayden Hubbard, Noah Lewis, Precious Bursey, Quentasia Horton, Jerrika Abram, Layna Adams, Deja Gipson, Kamari Johnson, Ahlyndia Manning, Melanie Myles, Kloe’ Sheridan, Micah Johnson, Natasha McClain, Tamaria Pitts, and Corlicia Tolliver.
