Living the message of the Prince of Peace

By Rusty Potter

As we celebrate the Prince of Peace this holiday season, we are reminded that peace is a way of living that we are all called to practice. The holidays bring bright lights, joyful music, and family traditions, but they also bring crowded schedules, heightened emotions, and at times, unresolved tensions. In the midst of it all, the true gift of the season is the opportunity to live in peace and to extend that peace to others.

Peace begins within. Before we gather around dinner tables, we must first make room for peace in our own hearts. Too often, we carry the weight of past disappointments, misunderstandings, or unmet or failed expectations into time meant for joy. This season invites us to pause, breathe, and release what no longer serves us. When we choose peace within, we are better equipped to share peace with those around us.

As families gather, peace becomes a daily practice. Every family has its stories – some joyful, some painful. Differences in opinions, lifestyles, and beliefs can surface when we come together. Yet the holiday season gives us a sacred chance to choose grace over grudges and understanding over judgment. Peace does not require us to agree on everything; it asks us to respect one another enough to listen, to be patient, and to respond with kindness.

Celebrating one another is also an act of peace. When we acknowledge the growth, resilience, and victories – both big and small – of those around us, we help create an atmosphere of love. A sincere compliment, a warm smile, or a heartfelt “I’m glad you’re here” can mend unseen wounds and strengthen bonds. Peace thrives where people feel valued and seen.

The Prince of Peace reminds us that peace is an active, not a passive, state. It is found in forgiveness freely given, in words spoken with care, and in love extended even when it is difficult. In a world often marked by division and unrest, our home can become a sanctuary of peace, a place where laughter outweighs conflict and love has the final word. Wishing you a holiday season overflowing with peace, love, and happiness.
