Listen to “Wise Advice”

By Lisa Wilmore

Scripture: …Ye men of Israel, take heed to yourselves what ye intend to do as touching these men. And now I say unto you, Refrain from these men, and let them alone: for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to nought: but if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God (Acts 5:35; 38-39).

The above noted scripture revealed Gamaliel’s, a Pharisee, advice to those who opposed Peter and John’s preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the temple. Peter and John met uncompromising criticism from those who were in high authority and believers of upholding the law. The high priest cautioned them not to preach in the name, Jesus. Nevertheless, they continued regardless of the threats. They were thrown into prison and then released by an angel. As soon as they were unconfined, they continued to stand and speak in the temple, as instructed by the angel.

When the apostles were summoned and brought before the high priest, he asked them, “Did not we straightly commend you that you should not teach in this name? Peter and the other apostles answered and said, “We ought to obey God rather than men. The God of our Father raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree. Him hath God exalted with His right hand to be a Prince and a Savior, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins. And we are His witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey Him” (Acts 5:29-32).
After these saying, Luke, the writer, noted that the council members were cut to the heart and took counsel to slay them.

However, Gamaliel (doctor of the law), advised them not to touch the apostles. He further told them that if this counsel or work be of them, it will come to nought, but if it is of God, ye cannot overthrow it. Gamaliel gave wise advice that convinced the council. They adhered to his instructions.

They refrained from slaying the apostles; however, they beat them and commanded them not to preach in the name, Jesus. The apostles were joyful because of their sufferings and continued to preach, Jesus. Do you take the advice from your pastors at your churches after they have shared the Word of God with you? God’s advice to us, through His servants, is to accept His Son. In so doing, we will inherit eternal life.
