Jesus settled our sin debt at the cross

By Lisa Wilmore

My Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

God has once again given us a new day, which encompasses new mercies. To make mention of, Jeremiah recorded in Lamentations the hope that we have through God’s compassion toward us. He documented, “It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.” “They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness” (Lamentations 3:22-23).

As I sit and ponder on today’s message, “Jesus settled our sin debt at the cross”, I am reminded of individuals who have died and left a wealth of items to be equally distributed to their family members. However, the family members are faced with the fact that their loved ones are still indebted to certain businesses or companies upon their demise. Interestingly, laws and rulings have been established to protect certain businesses to be able to either seek payment for the remaining balance or confiscate what the deceased has left behind in order to settle their debt. Therefore, if the family members wish to settle the deceased debt, they would either have to pay the debt or relinquish the item(s) to the company. Wow! Thank God for Jesus, who settled our sin debt at the cross!

How would you feel knowing that your sin debt was not settled-that you would have to pay for your sins when you meet the Heavenly Father? If it had not been for Jesus, we would all be in a world of trouble. Allow me to share what Paul recorded in his letter to the church of Colossae. He wrote, “When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all of our sins, having canceled of our legal indebtness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross” (Colossians 2:13-14 NIV). Thank You, Jesus!

The Bible teaches us that the “Wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23 KJV). If individuals do not accept Christ, they will be responsible for the payment of their own debt. Anyone who does not accept Jesus as his or her personal Savior, will never be able to pay the debt owed to God. In the end, God will condemn those individuals who refuse to accept His gift, His Son, Jesus.

We cannot afford to have just the knowledge of Jesus Christ, but we must accept Him in our hearts and know that He paid our debt in full.

Thank You, Jesus, for settling my debt!
