Scripture Reading: “You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment…
“Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift (Matthew 5:21-24).
My Christian Friends,
Every principle and standard that God requires of us is penned in the Holy Bible, His Word. No one must wonder or question what God says about how Christians should conduct themselves in any given situation. It is a blessing to be able to read the Word of God and allow the Holy Spirit to teach us how to deal with issues that may hinder the world from seeing our love for one another.
God’s Word is so magnificent. Even though His Word is magnificent, He instructs us to do things that may be difficult and uncomfortable to do. However, if we are children of God, we must adhere to His teachings to the best of our abilities in order that the world may see the love of Jesus Christ through us.
This message highlights the Scripture reading illuminating Jesus’ guidelines in how to handle it when a person has “wronged” us. As obedient children of God, we must make amends with our brothers and sisters in Christ. Yes, even if we believe we have not done anything wrong.
Particularly, we are just as guilty as the individual who has committed the infraction when we begin to gossip about the person and turn away with hatred or resentment while seeking revenge. Jesus’ teachings, in the text is designed to bring harmony to the Body of Christ while reconciling relationships and forgiveness of others. The world needs to see how we love one another. If the world does not see our love for each other, they may never see Christ.
We must go and be reconciled, first, to our brothers and sisters in Christ. Why? It is not about us, but it is about Jesus Christ. As difficult as it is, it is essential for the world to see the body of Christ forgiving and loving each other as Christ loves. Besides, our gifts are not accepted until we have reconciled our differences with fellow believers.
