How to avoid a Christmas hangover this season

By Rusty Potter

Christmas is an exciting time of the year in Monroe and the new year is just around the corner. It’s easy to overspend and end up paying for it well into the new year. The Christmas season can be expensive. If you are not careful you can easily rack up debt that could take years after the holidays are over to pay off. We do not want the debt from Christmas 2020 to combine with the debt of Christmas 2021. Many of us use credit cards to fund our Christmas presents purchases and may have problems paying back the debt after Christmas is over. We do not want to hit rock bottom when that credit card statement arrives in the new year. We want to enjoy the season without a financial hangover.

This year create a budget and stick to it and make a list of who you want to buy a present for. Planning plays an important part in being in control of your finances and aware of what you can afford and how much you can spend. Know your limits. When your list is done and you have checked it twice, it’s time to stop shopping. I want you to have some nice stuff this season. I just don’t want stuff to have you. Remember, time spent together is what’s always remembered, not necessarily the gifts.
