“Great is God’s faithfulness”

By Lisa Wilmore

Scripture: “My soul still remembers and sinks within me. This I recall to my mind, therefore I have hope. Through the LORD’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.”
(Lamentations 3:20–23, NKJV)

Greetings, Dear Hearts!

Indeed, great is God’s faithfulness.

First and foremost, I greet you in the only Name that truly matters-Jesus Christ, our everlasting, eternal, and endless Savior. Additionally, allow me to extend a heartfelt “Happy New Year” to each of you. It is truly a blessing to be able to make this declaration at the beginning of another year. For that reason alone, we ought to thank God for allowing us to see yet another season of life.
Moreover, beyond being thankful, it is a tremendous pleasure to share my deepest gratitude for the faithfulness of God. Time and time again, He has proven that He always keeps His promises. When circumstances are uncertain and outcomes are unclear, God remains dependable. Without question, we can boldly proclaim, “Great is Thy faithfulness.”

During this time of year, a close family member experienced significant hardships and was forced to rely on God as well as the support of others to be helped with difficult situations, some of which were self-inflicted. Nevertheless, through it all, God remained faithful to His Word. He promised, “I will never leave you nor forsake you,” and He kept that promise.

At times, it may seem as though all hope is lost. Bills become overwhelming, sickness invades our bodies, and joy feels distant. Even during seasons that are meant for celebration. Yes, even during God-centered holidays, our hearts can feel heavy. Yet, somehow and someway, God gently reminds us that “all is well”. If you are living, breathing, and able to meet your basic needs, God has already shown Himself faithful in your life. Only God can provide the peace we need to endure life’s journey. He is constant, dependable, and always present for His children. Truly, “Great is Thy faithfulness.”

In our aforementioned text, the prophet Jeremiah is deeply troubled by the suffering of Israel, which resulted from willful disobedience. Despite repeated warnings from Jeremiah and other prophets concerning idol worship, ingratitude, and unfaithfulness, the people refused to repent. Consequently, God allowed them to be exiled to Babylon for seventy years, just as He had promised. While lamenting their suffering in Chapter 3, Jeremiah pauses and remembers the unwavering faithfulness of God and in that moment, hope is restored.

Similarly, as I observed my family member endure hardship, it became clear that only God could intervene. When God was sought and trusted, He worked everything out. In response, that family member declared, “Great is Thy faithfulness.” Therefore, even in trying times, let us remember that “His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Thy faithfulness.”
