“Give us this day our daily bread”

By Lisa Wilmore

Scripture Reading: After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen (Matthew 6:9-13).

My Friends,

“To God be the glory for all the things He has done for us.” Truly, we must acknowledge the fact that it is only God who is providing for our needs as we witness the rising cost in everything we purchase. Interestingly, local vendors and others have followed this “cost model” and have risen prices, in some cases, two hundred percent. As a result, there are families who are continuously struggling to provide for their basic needs with a more stretched budget. Undoubtably, providing for the family was difficult during pre-Covid-19, but perhaps more difficult today.

With the rising cost of gas, high utility bills, food shortage, shipping cost, etc., some people may be wondering how they will feed the family and take care of other necessities on a daily basis.
Thank God for Jesus and His teachings about “Our daily bread” in the Model Prayer. In our noted text, Jesus teaches His disciples to pray. He teaches them about the giving of alms, prayer, fasting, money, and taking thought and care for the future (Matthew 6). Jesus let us know how to pray and to ask Him for our daily bread. In the past we may have been dependent upon the government to provide resources and funds for our daily bread needs, but we must understand that our Lord, Jesus is our provider. When there is no hope for bread, ask Jesus with expectancy that He will provide your daily needs.

“Give us this day our daily Bread”- this phrase in the Model prayer is exemplified throughout the Bible where God provided for those He loves, daily. Mainly, the Israelites were fed with manna each day. They were not permitted to gather anything for the next day or next week except the sixth day in order to keep the seventh day-the Sabbath Day, holy (Exodus).

“Give us this day our daily bread” shows us that God will provide for our bodily necessities, our basic needs day by day. So, our utter dependence on God is essential in these days and days to come. Trust Him! He will provide bread/manna day by day. But do not be choicy or complain about what He provides. Be thankful, bless it and eat!

Let us Pray: “Lord, thank You for Your daily bread. If we have an abundance of, please show us the families and persons who are in need in which we can share. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”
