Council makes good on promises, repeal actions begin

Southside “Brown Bombers” have begun series of repeals of actions by former city council, setting up potential veto showdown with Mayor Ellis

The Monroe City Council, led by its Southside members, has begun taking steps to undo several actions passed in the final days of the previous administration. In a meeting on Tuesday night, the council repealed one resolution and initiated the process to repeal three ordinances with a mayoral veto looming.

The repealed resolution, which had added two seats to the I-20 Economic Development District, was viewed by Southside members as an attempt to dilute their appointment power. The council voted along racial lines to rescind this action, with the “Brown Bombers” – Rev. Rodney McFarland, Minister Verbon Muhammad, and Councilwoman Mrs. Juanita Woods – voting for repeal.
