City Council’s new notification system, could keep victims in the loop

The Monroe City Council has taken a significant step to aid victims of violent crimes by passing an ordinance establishing a Comprehensive Violent Crime Victims’ Rights and Notification System.

   The ordinance, introduced by District 5 Councilman Verbon Muhammad, was approved after its second reading during the January 14, 2025, council meeting. This initiative aims to ensure that crime victims can track the outcomes of their complaints and receive assistance in recovering losses.

   Councilman Muhammad, who made improving responsiveness to crime victims a cornerstone of his campaign last year, expressed optimism about the ordinance’s impact.
