Chris Jackson, 60 dies in Wood Street house fire

The Monroe Fire Department is investigating a deadly house fire that broke out Monday night in the 2300 block of Wood Street, claiming the life of a 60-year-old man.

The fire was reported around 9:40 p.m. on June 30. Firefighters arrived to find the home engulfed in flames. After bringing the blaze under control, crews discovered the victim, identified as Chris Jackson, in a bedroom of the residence.

Emergency responders pronounced Jackson dead at the scene. Officials have not yet determined whether the home had a functioning smoke alarm at the time of the fire.

Investigators from the Monroe Fire Department are working to determine the cause of the fire. No additional injuries were reported.

This marks one of the latest fire-related fatalities in Monroe this year. Authorities remind residents of the importance of working smoke detectors in every home and recommend regular testing and battery replacement.
