“Celebrating 114 years…exemplifying excellence through Sisterhood and Service”

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® was founded on January 15, 1908, on the campus of Howard University in Washington, DC. The Sorority’s 16 Founders were among the fewer than 1,000 African American young women enrolled in higher education institutions during that time. Since that day 114 years ago, the sisterhood has grown to nearly 300,000 members worldwide.

On February 19th, the members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® – Omicron Iota Omega Chapter of West Monroe, LA celebrated 114 years of service dedicated to the founding principles of Sisterhood, Scholarship, and Service to All Mankind. Chapter President, Dr. Gloria J. George stated, “this annual Founders’ Day Observance and C.A.M.E.O. Awards event is a time of rededication to the Founders’ vision and an opportunity to acknowledge others who champion the same causes.” To that end, the CAMEO Awards portion of the program honors citizens and organizations that have made positive impacts in the areas of Community Service, the Arts, Medicine, Education and Organization. The virtual event was well attended and raised awareness of a myriad of causes rooted in the founding principles. The keynote speaker for the occasion was Mrs. Emile Blaine, South Central Leadership Chairman and Chancellor of the Faye B. Bryant Leadership Institute. Mrs. Jackie Slack served as Founders’ Day Chairman while Ms. Patricia Turner served as Chairman of the C.A.M.E.O. Committee.
