Build your skill, build your future

By Rusty Potter

There is one principle of success that I have always heard: if you master a skill, you will never go broke.
It doesn’t matter what the skill is. If you become best at it – whether it’s cutting hair, repairing cars, cooking meals, mowing yards, or baking pies – your gift will make room for you. A mastered skill not only sets you apart but also ensures that you will always be able to contribute value wherever you go.

We live in a world full of problems. Cars break down. Hair grows too long. Computers crash. Pipes leak. People get sick. People need encouragement, entertainment, and solutions every single day. The one who has trained themselves to become an expert at solving a particular problem will never be without an opportunity to earn. Why? Because people always seek out those who can solve their problems with excellence.

Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “ If a man can write a better book, preach a better sermon, or make a better mousetrap than his neighbor, though he builds his house in the woods, the world will make a beaten path to his door.” In other words, if you become so good at what you do, your work will stand out, the world will find you – even if you live in the woods. Excellence cannot be hidden.

Let’s be honest – mediocrity is everywhere. Many people can do a job, but very few excel at it. The hairdresser who “gets by” will always be looking for customers, but the hairdresser who masters their craft will have a waiting list. The mechanic who half-fixes a car may struggle, but the mechanic who masters their trade will have cars lined up down the street. Mastery creates demand.

But mastery does not come overnight. It takes discipline, dedication, and humility. You must be willing to learn, practice, and keep growing. You must take pride in your work, treating every customer, client, or task as though it were your audition for the biggest opportunity of your life. When you do this consistently, your reputation will speak for you.

The truth is, success is not reserved for the lucky or the wealthy – it is reserved for the prepared. If you are willing to master a skill, people will pay you, respect you, and seek you out. They will tell their friends about you. Word of mouth will travel farther than any advertisement because people trust excellence.

This is my challenge to you: what skill are you mastering? Not what job are you doing, but what skill are you sharpening to the point of mastery? If you don’t have one yet, find one! Invest in yourself. Take classes, read books, practice daily, and never settle for average.

Your future is not in the hands of chance – it is in the hands of your commitment to mastery. Remember this: when you solve people’s problems with excellence, you’ll never have to chase money.

Money will chase you.
