As deadline passes, many officials noncompliant, one owes fines

The last day for elected and appointed officials to file personal finance records and complete ethics training for 2022 was May 16th. Although the deadline has passed many local appointed and elected officials, are among the delinquents, with one official delinquent for over 14 years stacking up fines of over $14,000.

  Louisiana Law requires public officials, whether elected or appointed, to show proof that they comply with Louisiana’s ethics laws. Officials are required to participate in an annual training to file a report of their affiliations, businesses, and assets to avoid actions that may conflict with their personal interests.

  Candidates for public office are also required to file as well.

Those who fail to file, or file late could face fines of up to $100 a day up to $10,000. Additionally, the Louisiana Board of Ethics has the legal authority to void…
