Excellence Academy hosts “Academy awards” –Four day tour!
Nearly 1,000 people were on hand Monday for the first "Academy Awards” program saluting students of the Excellence Academy.
The awards program/graduation was a hybrid of an awards program, talent show and graduation all rolled into one. The event held at the Monroe Civic Center attracted a large audience of parents, elected officials and dignitaries for a 90 minute awards program styled after the cinema’s Academy Awards program.
The program featured drama, dance, Shakespeare recitations, Mime and visual arts presentations from the various departments of the area’s only performing arts school.
The highlight of the night was graduation of the school’s first class of 8th graders who will be attending area high school’s in the fall.
Excellence is ending its school year this week with a four day Louisiana History tour to acquaint new 8th graders with the Common Core requirements for 8th grade Social Studies and Science.
The entire school’s eligible student body and staff are participating in the tour that will take in 12 parishes, New Orleans and a state capitol tour.
School officially ends at Excellence when the students return from the four day all expense paid tour on Friday.
Shandra Smith, principal of Excellence thanked the public and parents for supporting the school in its inaugural year. She said 78% of the school’s student body scored basic and above on standardized testing, which becomes its baseline for future growth. The school had many students scoring mastery and advanced which are included with the Monroe City School system’s overall performance scores.
